Glass Wall Lamp Bibe – modernism in a feminine version. One in a series of three lamps we designed as a tribute to Eileen Gray – in our opinion one of the most fascinating and innovative figures from the era of modernism.
The form of the lampshade was inspired by the life and work of Eileen Gray – architect and furniture designer – underappreciated in her lifetime but today heralded as the first lady of modernist design and the icon of Bauhaus. Contrary to her contemporaries such as Le Corbusier, Gray thought “a house is not a machine to live in. It is the shell of man, his extension, his release, his spiritual emanation”. In the designs created by Eileen Gray one can clearly see views polemic to the decidedly masculine, hard line of the male stars of art and architecture of her times. It is her furniture in particular which introduced feminine tones into the severe modernist style. One of her designs, the so-called BIBENDUM CHAIR became our inspiration in creating a lampshade for our new line of lamps, hence the symbolic name BIBE.
Glass Wall Lamp Bibe is made in a traditional way by blowing molten glass into a mould. The three-layer opaque glass has a delicate milky colour. The lampshade consists of three joint ‘tyres’ (bringing to mind the famous chair) topped with a brass cover to which the glass shade if fixed in the way typical of the time – with specially designed screws. The whole construction is fitted onto a simple wall bracket. The lamp is equipped with two types of fixtures to choose from – either an elegant, minimalist flat plaque (which is needed to hide the wires in the flush-mounted electrical box inside the wall) or a solid two-part rosette bracket for a standard non-flush connection.
We created Bibe Lamps thinking about refined interiors in which ‘less means more’. The feminine geometry of the shape will provide an interesting accent in daytime and become an equally attractive form in the evening. Glass Wall Lamp Bibe will perfectly complement large prints and house plants, and will look outstanding against a dark background. The opaque glass of the lampshade will delicately diffuse light, and depending on the strength and colour of the lightbulb, will infuse it with an atmospheric honeyed hue or delicate white glow creating excellent everyday lighting. Owing to its substantial size, the glass lampshade Wall Lamp Bibe can be treated as the main light source e.g. in the bedroom on both sides of the bed, as the light above the bathroom mirror, and provide lighting in a walk-in wardrobe or at the entrance. The artistic soul of the Bibe Lamp also willingly lends its shape to public spaces – a hotel, a restaurant, and even an elegant office suite are also an ideal location for that unique wall lamp.
